The conflict may be overt---as between the prophet or reformer and the imperfect society. The conflict may be implicit---as between the impotent child and the repressive school system. The conflict may be hidden---as between members of a collusion trapped in their double binds. In each instance deeper insights either intensify the conflict, or make the present conflict appear to be intensified by revealing it more clearly. The person may seek to avoid acceptance of an incipient insight, for by avoiding acceptance of the insight---the person may maintain a higher level of personal equilibrium, than by accepting the insight. The person's behavior will thus depend upon the person's prerequisite for personal equilibrium. Different people are at peace with themselves under different conditions; e.g., some are at peace with themselves while engaged in dishonest dealings, and others are not. It is the overt business of colleges and universities to promote the development of new knowledge through the promotion of the acceptance of new insights. It is important therefore that the faculty and administration of a college or university understand the prerequisites for insight---as well as the logic of the prerequisites for their formal courses. If the social conditions for the acceptance of insight are not present in their classrooms and relationships between members of the academic community, then the cognitive activities which form the overt activities of the institution may be nothing more than the reworkings of passe insights as occurred around the writings of Aristotle for about one thousand years of The Dark Ages. Technical complexity and sophistication are not the essence of insight, understanding, and wisdom. Profound insights are acceptable only to people who enjoy total communication freedoms---freedom to perceive and share insights which reveal collusions and taboos which stand in the way of further insights, understanding, and charitable acts. The prerequisite to a college or university doing its job---is the presence of total communication freedom among the members of the academic community---else insights and learning will be stifled, and wisdom pass away.
