To them, because of their decision, spirits are not objective realities. Through their decisions such people live in a coherent world of cause and effect involving only relationships between objective realities in a geometric space/time. Such people tend to point to the unanimity of their decision as evidence of the ultimate value of their decision. They tend to be unaware of the reality of collusions and the tragic costs of collusions. Objectivists perceive the objects of everyday life as collections of molecules, molecules as structures composed of atoms, atoms as structures made up of electrons, protons, and neutrons; and such elementary particles as structures with quarks as their constituents; etc. In like manner their home is on one of many planets in but one of many probable solar systems about but one of many stars which compose but one of many galaxies which form but one of such galaxies which form our universe which may be but one of many universes---etc. Reality is thus analyzed in a reductionist manner into a collection of objects moving about in geometric space according to laws of cause and effect. Spirits are not found nor perceived to be needed in the drama of cause and effect. The question remains, however, whether or not there is human value in perceiving human relationships in terms of the presence of the power of various spirits. Do those people who believe in spirits live more or less fulfilling lives than those who do not? Are they more or less alienated, frustrated, anxious, violent, sick, creative, compassionate, loving, etc.? What evidence is there that it is wise to refuse to believe in any spirits? According to what theory are spirits not real? What evidence supports that theory? Questions of value are decided in human terms: in terms of desires, fear, hopes, beliefs, commitments, etc. Basic assumptions may be evaluated in terms of the behavior of the people who make such assumptions. You may decide how real spirits are---in terms of the behavior of the people who do, or do not---believe in them. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
