People who fear vulnerability often choose to live emotionally disengaged. Their form of caring tends to be cognitive, rational, intellectual, logical, etc. The course of human events does not elicit much in the way of an emotional response within them, or emotionally laden dialogue with others. They seek to avoid emotional hurt by avoiding emotional involvements. They choose to suffer the dullness, boredom, and loneliness of emotional disengagement. In their ignorance of the meaning of being emotionally engaged, they cannot compare their actual life with what it might be. Human motivations often spring from emotional engagements. Jack behaves differently if he knows that Jill cares about him than he behaves if he know that Jill does not care about him---or is ignorant of Jill's caring about him. There is a difference between Jill being emotionally engaged in a personal relationship with Jack on the one hand---and Jill being dedicated to the purpose of getting Jack to behave in a specific way on the other hand. Imagine that Jill is a science teacher and that Jack is a science student in one of Jill's classes. Jack's motivations as a student will depend to a large extent on whether or not Jack and Jill are engaged in a mutual personal relationship of respect and caring. Teaching techniques cannot substitute for a healthy personal relationship of respect and caring, or are engaged in a relationship of mutual manipulation. Teaching techniques cannot substitute for a healthy personal relationship which involves mutual emotional engagement. Human motivations flow more wisely from healthy emotional relationships---than from intelligent techniques. Healthy emotional engagements are mutual, each participant caring about the welfare of the others, and being vulnerable to the hurts which others may experience. Emotions are communal in a group which is emotionally engaged. Hopes, aspirations, fears, disappointments, aversions, joys, etc. are shared and elicit responsible responses from responsive people. Such sharing occasions both the energy and the direction of motivation on the part of the participants. Effective teachers are emotionally engaged with their students and care about their students as whole persons. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
