Communications which are devoid of emotions are impersonal. Revealing one's emotions to another calls upon the other to sympathize. The call may not be recognized, and even if recognized, it may not be acknowledged. The other person may not be emotionally mature enough to feel secure while aware of the revealed emotions, and so repress awareness of them. The emotional revelations may so embarrass the other person as to effectively paralyze any appropriate response. In such instances emotional dialogue is blocked through simple lack of maturity. In more perverse situations emotional dialogue may be blocked by systematizations of emotionally immature responses to emotional revelations. Emotionally immature people may develop collusions and supportive practices which operate to repress emotional revelations which are disturbing to the emotionally immature persons. In such instances it is not merely the person who might be embarrassed by an emotional revelation who is repressed; the person who would otherwise be open, honest, and communicative in intimate dialogue is repressed and frustrated. Such frustration often is expressed through violence of diverse forms. In highly rationalized situations emotional dialogue may be blocked by value systems which affirm objectivity, systematics, analysis, measurements, computations, predictions, and control---to the exclusion of intimate personal relationships. It is logically impossible to be thoroughly objective about other persons' emotions without violating one's own personal integrity---for their emotions are a call to one's own emotions, and to maintain objectivity the call must be dealt with unemotionally. Thus people who value objectivity highly tend towards dealing with persons in impersonal ways. The research scientist who has been trained exclusively in research finds it virtually impossible to treat his students as persons whose emotional responses to science instruction are an integral part of their personal response to the scientist. The scientist who ignores their emotions or responds to them exclusively objectively does not help them learn science. Neither does the scientist who through emotional immaturity is threatened by their emotional responses. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
