Enthusiastic teachers believe in the truth and value of the text and context that they teach. It is hard to be enthusiastic in presenting material about which you have doubts regarding its value or integrity. Thus there is a systematic tendency for educational institutions to propagate narrow doctrinaire points of view within departmental structures which are selling their particular goods. The best salesman are those who are most convinced and convincing regarding the worth of their goods. They tend not to have wholistic perspectives which include critical appraisals of the limited values of their goods. Profound critics tend to make students within a department be ill at ease. The students may resent anybody who undermines their own sense of security and identification with the standard departmental line. They want to "belong" to the secure departmental establishment, and to succeed in the traditional paradigms of the department. The profound critic threatens such students' visions of their future, and is not rewarded with positive evaluations. Students who have not accepted the basic attitudes and presuppositions of an enthusiastic teacher are likely to be made ill at ease by the teacher's enthusiasm. They may very well feel violated by the enthusiasm and decide to leave the presence of such enthusiasm. They do not become majors in that department, leaving only enthusiastic students to be majors who will be critical of any non-enthusiastic teacher in the department. Thus critical students and critical teachers are eliminated from the department. This process of departmental purification takes place in an especially powerful way in graduate school department that prepare the next generation of teachers and professors. The students are especially vulnerable to research oriented professors who tend not to be sensitive to students as whole persons with individual rights and unique characteristics. Thus the future teachers become trained to sell their narrow perspectives enthusiastically.
