Truth can be brutal. To press upon others brutal truth may do them violence. It is no enough to be truthful. Truth must be guided by love. Justice alone can not guide truth adequately. Only the sensitive person is likely to know when speaking the truth will be helpful, and when speaking the truth is likely to be violent. Legalists are not likely to have such knowledge. Such knowledge is personal knowledge, not cognitive, intellectual, rational, or systematic in essence. Such knowledge is not merely truth. The propriety of truth depends upon context. The important aspects of the content include the relationships between those participating in the context, including the style, mood, feelings, emotions, anticipations, and their like. The injection of certain truths into a context may do violence to the context and so to the participants in the context. Such violence may tear apart creative relationships and block dialogue. Truth which does such violence may sometimes be injected in a loving way into a context. Lovers do not insist upon the injection of such truth in a violent way. Lovers may have different levels of sensitivity regarding context and so experience violence at each other's hands due to such differences in sensitivity. The impropriety of injecting truth which may be evident to one --- may be anything but evident to the other. The injection which seems proper because it is honest --- may in another's view be violent because it does violence to a cherished context or mood. The meaning of speaking the truth may thus depend upon the perception of the context in which the truth is spoken. Thus truth is meaningful only in context, not only in terms of the symbols which are used to convey the truth. There is a personal meaning to each cognitive truth which is different from the cognitive meaning of the truth. The personal meaning is highly contextual. The cognitive meaning depends upon the symbolic meaning of the symbols used to convey truth. The personal meaning depends upon the context in which the truth is conveyed and appropriated. The way in which the truth is conveyed and appropriated gives it personal meaning which is not embodied in the symbols used to represent the truth and convey it. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
