Students who are having learning difficulties are in need of sympathy. If they are in a competitive context they will find it difficult to get sympathy from those other students against whom they are in competition. Is a racer who is neck and neck with you---likely to sympathize with your difficulties in pulling ahead of her? If the teacher has the responsibility of passing judgment upon how much you learn---are you as a student going to feel at ease in going to the judge to ask for sympathy when you are doing a poor job of living up to the standards of judgment? Where then is a student to turn for sympathy? Are the counselors going to offer much sympathy when they do not have tenure like the professors who sit in judgment over the student who is seeking sympathy. There are limits to how far the counselors will feel free to sympathize with the student in trouble. Professors who have prepared for teaching by specializing in scholarly research---are not likely to be very good at being sympathetic with students who have difficulty with scholarly work. The professors are unlikely to have been trained to respect persons who are emotionally open and honest. Such professors are not likely to have had role models whom they might copy in being sympathetic with students whose learning is blocked by the lack of sympathetic understanding of their perceptual difficulties. Wise students know better than to seek sympathy from such professors. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
