Such a teacher's response may be characterized as one of classification of the student. Some teachers pride themselves on how quickly and accurately they can classify students. They aspire to faster and more accurate classification and work on developing the necessary technologies. The students' response to teachers who classify them may be of many forms: (1) Despair, (2) anger, (3) frustration, (4) rebellion, (5) disrespect, (6) challenge, (7) misdirected vigorous activity, (8) violence in verbal, political, or physical form. The student who accepts the teacher's classification out of respect for the teacher is doomed. The student who rejects the teacher's classification is confronted with a series of double-binds which are difficult to transcend. Few students have the maturity and power to transcend such double-binds. Few teachers are able to perceive such double-binds and disrespect the students who disrespect their pattern of classifying students. The disrespectful students are failed by the disrespectful teachers, and the cause of liberation is frustrated. These things take place on liberal arts college campuses where the teachers are ostensibly dedicated to the liberation of their students. Such colleges do a good job of classifying students into those who will and will not be successful in graduate work or business. They pride themselves on how well they can classify applicants for admission, and how well they can attract those applicants who are classified "likely to succeed." They then sell their college on the basis of how exclusive they are, rather than on the basis of how well they can promote learning. In the coming years there will be a buyer's market as regards instructional services. Wise students and parents will check to see before they buy, and try to see if a college is classifying students, or helping students learn from failures. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
