The central problem is one of affection, of emotions, of feelings. Logic and argumentation will not change affection, emotion, or feelings. The recitation of facts, no matter how true they may be, will not be helpful. The corrective steps which need to be taken are not logical, argumentative, or informational in nature. The corrective steps must promote trust. Trust here is not conviction of reliability in behavior patterns. Where the the case, we might as well say that the students trust the teacher to be emotionally insecure, arrogant, overbearing, manipulative, selfish, or whatever the case may be. The problem is that the students do not feel secure in being vulnerable with the teacher; they can not expose their ignorance, confusion, doubts, fears, mistakes, errors, failures, blunders, etc. Students can not learn from teachers to whom they can not reveal where they most need to learn. It is not enough that the teachers have sincere intentions to do for the students what the teachers regard as best for the students. The students probably do not welcome paternalistic assistance which is out of touch with their desires. It is not enough that the teachers by making great personal sacrifices to help the students be successful in terms of the teachers' system of values. The students may not respect the teachers' system of values. Students can not feel free to reveal themselves to paternalistic or sacrificial teachers who do not respect the students as persons deciding what is valuable for themselves. If the students perceive themselves to be in a battle, with teachers on the opposing side, then the students can not reveal their coping strategies to their teachers. Secrecy must be the order of the day. Thus the students are cut off from learning that which teachers might helpfully teach them. The adult student who in childhood trusted teachers, but learned that they could not be trusted through painful experiences; such a student will experience a frustrating double bind in higher education. The need for teachers' affirmations remains, but no the freedom to trust them. It is a risky enterprise to find out which professors can be trusted---especially if they are poor listeners.
