People who do not respect affection, instincts, intuition, feelings, desires, and emotions have great need for rationalization. They are not free to acknowledge and affirm the sources of their motivation and the nature of those sources. They must dress up their motivations to make them appear respectable. They would be embarrassed to have their motivations be seen naked, so they clothe them according to the fashions of their sub-culture so that they will be regarded as respectable citizens. Rationalization is a technique to avoid excommunication from an intolerant conformal sub-culture. Through rationalization primitive motivations are made to appear sophisticated and people lose touch with the real roots of their behavior. Much of higher education is rationalization. Higher education shows little respect for affection, instincts, intuition, feelings, desires, fear, and other non formal motivations. Rather than respect such motivations professors tend to objectify and analyze them as part of their program of rational education. Motivations are not accepted and affirmed, they are objectified and analyzed. People are separated from their motivations in order that they may understand their motivations objectively and rationally. In this sense education is an alienative process by which people become separated from their roots in order that they may examine their roots objectively and analytically. Such education in not integrative. It does not promote wholeness, integrity, balance, love, wisdom, and respect. It promotes criticism, faultfinding, perfectionism, alienation, frustrations, anxiety, excommunication, etc. We need to understand in non-rational ways why it is that we are so intent upon giving rational explanations for all our behavior.
