Jack does not like beets. Their preferences may be objectively verified. Mother translates her preference into an objective statement about beets. Mother says not, "I like beets." but "Beets taste good." She does not say, "Beets taste good to me." but just "Beets taste good." She forgets, as do most scientists, the important role of the "observer". Her statement would more accurately be a statement about the relationship between beets and her, rather than an arrogant statement about beets as objectified and separated from relationship with her. Observations pertain to relationships between "objects" and "subjects" relationship when stating an observation is to be less than fully honest. Jack as a child may not be able to criticize mother's faulty reporting, but Jack knows that beets are not objects which "taste good", much less "are good". Jack knows intuitively that he plays an essential role in the process of tasting and how beets taste. He is unconvinced by Mother's instance that beets taste good. A compulsively objective culture does not respect personal reports of personal perceptions. Reports are respected only if they are objectified, rationalized, homogenized, quantified, analyzed, etc. The raw data of unique personal sensory experience tends not to be affirmed or respected. It is not personal relationships with persons or objects which are respected, it is objectified statements about ostensibly separated objects which are respected. The personal participation of the subject in the subject-object relationship of sensation, perception, feeling, and affect is denied. The physicist which makes such denials in professional activities can be relatively successful unit: (1) Confronted with the Heisenberg uncertainties of quantal phenomena, and (2) Confronted with the personal uncertainties of personal phenomena. Teachers are involved in essentially personal relationship with their personal uncertainties. To deny the reality of the personal participation of the teacher in the perception of the student is to objectify the student and undermine the possibility of a helpful relationship.
