That which should be present is not present, and we are unaware of the absence. It is hard to see that which is not present, and often because we don't see it we don't miss it. Our collusions are often responsible for us not perceiving that which is present. Even more, our collusions are often responsible for us not being aware of absences. Absences are defined my context. That which is absent is absent from a context. Absences are thus to be understood in terms of contextual analysis. But we are not often trained in contextual analysis. Our focus is usually not upon context. We do not seek to understand something in terms of its context, but in terms of its internal structure. We are trained in fragmentary analysis. Thus we are not often trained in contextual analysis in terms of which we might learn to perceive and understand absences. Usually we try to understand why certain elements are present in a certain situation, either physical or non- physical. An element may be an element of a culture, society, institution, intellectual work, meeting, group discussion, etc. We analyze what is present in such. Rarely do we try to understand the absences in such, because rarely are we aware of the absences. Yet, there may be much to be gained in mutual awareness and mutual understanding of absences---through contextual analysis. We need to understand how those elements which are present may be responsible for the absence of other elements. We also need to understand how one absence may be responsible for another absence. The absence of one element may cause the absence of another. In this sense nothing may cause nothing in a positive sense. To be aware of and understand how absences can cause each other is not easy. Yet many of the problems we have may not be dealt with wisely---until we learn to fruitfully carry out contextual analysis of the inter-relationships between absences, between absences and presences; as well as between presences. Our collusions, taboos, traditions, fears, compulsions, etc. play central roles in our lack of awareness and understanding of absences. To deal with them will take more than knowledge, information, and logic. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
