The verbal and quantitative communications which are the focus of the academic world do not focus upon the existential experience of the participants, but upon the verbal and mathematical communications of others discussing the verbal and mathematical communications of yet others---most likely of long ago. Intellectuals often prefer to talk about what others have talked about--- because of affirmations of the importance of the previous talk. Very rarely are the existential experiences of persons in the academy affirmed as important, and so there is little recognition expected in discussing the existential experiences of unknown people. The academic world is not programmed for action, but for perfecting knowledge and ways of drawing conclusions. The academic world is not designed to promote creativity in the secular world of real lives. It is designed to encourage the repeated digestion of multiply digested ideas. Higher education would be more vital were it more concerned with relating existential experiences to each other and to the future. The existential experiences of the participants would be important in the program which was balanced. The program would encourage honesty by providing a safe place for honesty, rather than for competition for limited affective affirmations from professors who have little affection to offer. The personal experiences of the participants can not be focal in higher education so long as the participants can not fail safe. Honesty is impossible so long as the professors are participants in the punishment of those who fail. For this reason personal honesty about existential experiences is rare in elitist schools which are highly competitive, and stand ready to flunk out students who do not conform to the required pace of learning. With honesty inhibited such elitist schools can not successfully focus upon the participants' existential experiences, and so they play games in which the focus in upon other people's experiences and upon discussions of other people's experiences.
