The elitist and highly intellectual academic community tends towards placing high value upon logic, analysis, verbal expressions---and relatively low value upon sensory experiences, personal intimacy, and non-consensual perceptions. Because of their responsibility for certification, professors tend to be concerned with behavior which is consensual at least, if not thoroughly objective. Instruction focuses upon teaching to testing. There is little effort to help students learn in ways which can not be tested. Sensory experiences, personal intimacy, and non-consensual perceptions do not lend themselves to testing which is objective, verbal, and/or consensual in nature. Thus collusions develop within academic professions to obscure, ridicule, and/or deny the value of that which can not be tested and certified through traditional procedures. Philosophers and theologians are ostensibly dedicated to the clarification of thought and ultimate values. Their technologies pertain to the exposure of faulty thinking and valuing, and the development of systematic understandings of human thought and values. Philosophical and theological technologies can, like other technologies, be put to the service of the collusions which dominate the incarnations of the technologies. Philosophers and theologians may turn their educational activities into programs of indoctrination of students into their collusions. They may teach their students about the ultimate importance of the accumulation of verbal knowledge represented by the work of the few truly great thinkers of all time. They may help their students come to recognize the superficial level of thinking which is characteristic of uneducated people whose lives are dominated by sensory pleasures, personal relationships, and non-consensual perceptions. By helping their students become aware of the sophisticated thinking of a few great men, they liberate their students from the narrowness of people who do not spend most of their lives reading books. They help their students transcend all forms of non- rational behavior and help them focus their lives in rationally meaningful ways. Then their lives are characterized by dialogues which may be fully preserved on the printed page. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
