Traditional technical training acculturates students into the technical sub-culture, leads them to share the affective life-style and the collusions of the technical sub- culture. The affective lives of technocrats tend to be emotionally unexpressive. Technocrats are not among the most expressive of affection, emotions, feelings, desires, etc. Their tendency to be affectively non-expressive is a central aspect of their life-style, a life-style which is learned in the context of technical training. The teaching of technocratic affirmations takes place in parallel with the teaching of technical knowledge, skills, techniques, reasoning, etc. The student that does not learn to affirm the values of the teacher---is not likely to be regarded with favor by the teacher. The teacher teaches those students who do not affirm his values---that it is exceedingly difficult to learn the technical subject matter---and so it becomes very difficult for such students to learn. The elite technocrats thus creates elite-learning-blocks and deprives such students of non-elitist experiences which are the foundations for learning. They impose "helpful constraints" in ostensible efforts to help those students who are critical of technocratic values. Observant students learn that to succeed you must affirm the values of the teacher; it is not enough to gain technical competency. Only the students who learn technocratic affirmations are successful in the grading game in which the teacher writes the rules, creates the playing field, serves as referee, and keeps score. Their affective teaching and learning models are made invisible by collusions which the teacher very powerfully affirms in non-objective ways. Technical students are encouraged to focus all their learning in objective ways so that they do not have non- objective ways to perceive the non-objective ways in which the technocratic collusions are affirmed. By keeping technical students immature with respect to non-technical ways of coping---technocrats protect their vested interests, biases, collusions, and technocratic values. The teaching of technocratic affirmations is a required part of the job of technocratic educators. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
