Professionals whose self esteem depends upon being elite thus do not help make it easy for novices to learn their professions; to do so would undermine their own self esteem. Such elite professionals are bound to give novices subtle and/or overt signals which say that the profession is elite because of how difficult it is to learn the profession. Only the very best and most dedicated students can succeed. Such signals occasion the very difficulties which they signify---without them it would not be so difficult for students to learn the profession. They create the reality which they profess to be an objective reality. By collusions the professionals maintain that such difficulties are objectively real, rather than acknowledge that they are the result of professional choices expressive of the values of the professionals. Professional educators find themselves in double binds whenever their professions are elite professions. As educators their responsibility is to facilitate learning. As elite professionals their task is to keep their profession elite, to maintain elite learning blocks which will keep out all but the most determined and most able students. Elite professional educators' task is to set up obstacle courses and monitor the competitors who choose to try to get through the course. It is unprofessional for them to try to help the competitors to get through the courses. That would be unfair assistance. That would let into the professions students who were not qualified to be elite professionals. It is unthinkable what might be the consequences of letting non-elitists into elite professions, and so elitists do not think about what the implications would be. Elite-learning-blocks inhibit perceptions and communications which would educe young people in ways which would enable them to be of greater service than are the elitists of today's professions. In particular elite- learning-blocks inhibit the development of sensitive personally oriented educators---who might educe future professionals---who would be so personally oriented---that they would put the service of people---above the maintenance of the elitism of their profession. Thus the removal of elite-learning- blocks is central to preparing integrative college science teachers. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
