Too often coping in the adult world is experienced as giving up the values of childhood in order to survive. The personal world of childhood's integrity in a world of friendly I-Thou relationships fades into misty memories which are dominated by the realistic world of the objective analysis of what it takes to get ahead and survive in a harshly competitive world. The simple curiosity, awe, and wonder of childhoods' approach to new experiences---is replaced by playing the game of calculating the expected responses and reacting as expected, rather than responding as a person with integrity. Instead of growing through the developmental stages of personal relationships---people interact in much the same way that elementary particle interact---according to eternal rules which depend upon unchanging particulate characteristics which are also unchanging. Each person becomes fixed in character and is fit into the social machine wherever that fixed character best fits, or is rejected as unfit, as the case may be. Much of the adult experience is a thoughtless attempt to regain the wonderful feelings of childhood---of I-Thou relationships, personal integrity, curiosity, awe, wonder, affection, sensory activity, etc. Too often the attempts are in an attempts are in an analytic objective mode--- with is impotent in the face of the felt needs. Failure intensifies the essential needs. Resource consumptive efforts alienate the adults from their vital ecosystem and intensify the feelings of need. Fancy houses, cars, clothing, electronic entertainment, vacations, etc. do not satisfy the root yearnings which are occasioned by the alienation from childhood. Adults all too often fall even further into frantic resource---consumptive efforts to succeed---in competitive efforts to get ahead, in going back to their lost childhoods. Parents may help future generations avoid this trap by pointing it out to their children, so that their children at least have a chance of stepping around the trap, rather than falling into it as so many people have done in the past.
