They are likely to become possessive people who will promote the growth of a possession oriented producer society which is focused upon ownership of land, objects, people, inventions, ideas, salvation, redemption, forgiveness, acceptability, reputations, and God's services. Children who do not learn to give generously become adults who attempt to control all that they try to own and keep. They become adults who can not let go of their possessions and have a compulsive need to gather more and more possessions. They seek salvation in the growth of all that may be possessed---and tend to consume all available natural resources in their compulsive attempts to own and control all that is about them. They in the end upset the ecological balance upon which they depend for their survival---and in the end give back to the their environment in degraded form all that they took from it, minus much of the order, diversity and beauty which was there before them. There are no logical reasons to give generously. Generosity can not logically be shown to be an effective means to some previously chosen end. Technocrats are not likely to choose generosity as a technique to solve a problem; and even were they to do so, their motivation for choosing generosity as a technique would probably undermine the beneficial aspects of generosity---and they would conclude (and correctly) that generosity is not an efficient technique to use to achieve selected goals. Thus technically oriented people are very unlikely to discover the integrative aspects of generosity if in their childhood they did not have before them role models of generous integrative people. Learning to give generously most often occurs when children and students have generous role models in parents and teachers. Educational administrators will do well to encourage teachers to be generous people, rather than not. Teachers who are not generous with help, support, encouragement, affirmations, praise, assistance, etc. teach their students far more than technical content. They teach a whole way of life, a life style which will dominate their students and their students' children. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
