They may have a program to: become a millionaire by age 35, become President by age 50, get a Nobel prize by age 40, marry a most beautiful woman, raise a large family, be sexually popular, etc. When a person is defined by a well defined program other persons may or may not fit into that program. People will thus be evaluated in terms of how well they fit into the well defined program, especially if the program is rigidly internalized. If the personal program is not flexible, then other people will be used and abused to fulfill the program, rather than to fulfill the other people's potentials and the potentials of the relationship between the other people and the self. Well defined self-programs are characteristic of just one person, not characteristic of the potentials of the relationships between people. Thus well defined self-programs tend to undermine the potentialities of human relationships. Human beings are not fulfilled by the accomplishment of self-programs, but by the fulfillment of the potentialities in the unique relationships between self and others. Those potentialities can not be anticipated in advance of the beginning of a relationship. Thus to rigidly internalize a self-program is to do violence to the possibility of fulfilling self through unique unanticipated relationships. Programs for personal salvation tend to be defined in terms of individuals, not in terms of unique relationships. Religious leaders who promote programs for personal salvation thus tend to undermine human fulfillment which depends upon the fulfillment of the potentialities of unique unanticipated personal relationships. Legalistic programs cannot specify the proper behavior for each situation. Situation ethics can not prescribe how to achieve human fulfillment according to any program for personal salvation. Generalizations about how people find meaning in life tend to obscure the unique characters who find meaning by being responsive to the potentialities of unique relationships. Thus abstraction, generalizations, and laws pertaining to human behavior are of limited value. They should not be elevated to positions of ultimate value and adoration. Idols may be made of abstractions, generalizations, and laws, as well as of wood, clay, gold, silver, etc. Ancient forms of idols and idolatry have given way to modern forms. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
