The meaning of the elementary parts of a communication, a message, depends upon their context. The context may be defined by other parts of the communication, the events which have occurred just before the transmission of the communication, the events which have occurred just as the transmission is received, the social context in which the communication takes place, the patterns of culture and traditions which surround the communication, etc. The meaning of a message does not reside in the elemental parts of the message of themselves, but in the interrelationships between the parts of the message and their context. The meaning of a message is not found by taking the message apart, but by examining all of it within its broader context; not analysis, but contextual perception is the key to understanding messages. Misunderstanding often arises because of different contextual perceptions of the same message. Different contexts give the same message different meanings. The transmitter and receiver of a message may not perceive the message within the same context, and so not have the same understanding of the meaning of the message. To focus upon the elements of the message will not clear up the misunderstanding which arose from perceiving the message within different contexts. Thus analysis of the misunderstood message will not be helpful. Those who misunderstand each other's contexts and the contexts in which their messages are being perceived---need to share contexts. Contexts may be in part defined by expectations, desires, goals, priorities, values, etc. A context of a message may thus be internal to the recipient of the message. What a message will mean depends in large part upon the recipient of the message. The meaning is not a property of the message, but is something which relates to the message and the recipient and/or transmitter. Meaning is not an objective property of a message. It is not helpful to argue about what a message "really" means. It is helpful to share perceptions of a message within different contexts, and to try to clarify the ways in which different contexts of perception lead to different understandings of the meaning of the message.
