In the absence of inter- cultural understanding the members of different cultures may suspicious, distrustful, and seek to achieve invulnerability through the use of defensive techniques. Such defensive measures are likely to be perceived as threatening and occasion further suspicion, distrust, and counter-defensive measures. In instances of extreme inter-cultural misunderstanding the members of the cultures may be lead into participating in violent attacks upon each other in tragic efforts to settle misunderstandings. International ways are merely the most objective and obvious examples of such violent attacks. Often the attacks take the form of violent communications in foreign languages which are misunderstood by many of those involved. Not all foreign languages are verbal languages. Non- verbal languages are often foreign to us. Different cultures use different non-verbal languages as well as different verbal languages. Two people may share the same verbal language, but not use the same non-verbal language. Two people may share the same non-verbal language, but not use the same verbal language---although this latter case is probably not as common as the former. Foreign languages are best taught by persons who are thoroughly familiar with the language to be taught and the language of the students who are to learn the foreign language. This is true regardless of whether the languages in question are verbal or nonverbal. It is possible to learn a foreign language by cultural immersion, as infants learn; yet it appears that with age we become less adoptive of such learning. In fact, it would seem that the ability to learn foreign languages even with the benefit of instruction tends to decrease with age. Thus it is important to help young children learn such languages as they may need in their adult lives---be those languages verbal and/or nonverbal, and associated with different nations as cultures, or with subcultures defined by work-place, profession, educational training, geography, etc. If we do not learn enough languages as young people we are likely to misunderstand each other as adults.
