In a culture which is dedicated to deferred satisfaction affection may be inhibited to motivate work for terminal affection. The culture may fear that present affection may undermine the motivation to work, to be productive, to conform to proper behavior patterns. The withholding of affirmations, affection, respect, etc. may be a technique to motivate desired conventional behavior. People may be coerced into conventional behavior by making them work for terminal affection. A society which know affection only as terminal affection is likely to be a very frustrated society. Its frustrations are likely to be expressed in many forms of violence and perversion---not all of them obvious to members of the society. People's behavior will be dictated by traditional, institutional, legal, and other norms, rather than by each persons nature, needs, desires, experiences, perceptions, etc. The dedication to terminal affection will thus undermine the discovery of satisfactory ways of coping through personal experimentation. Terminally affected people are not free to make their own discoveries about living. They are the victims of authoritarian conventions regarding living. They are imprisoned in a striving for a reward which is always held just out of reach---with rare expectations. Terminally affected people tend to lead perverted lives compared to what their lives might be. They need to learn to live in a new world where affection, trust, vulnerability, love, openness, responsiveness, and persons are real. In such a world there is no need to wait for terminal moments to enjoy life in love. It is a quite different world which is founded on different foundations than is the world of terminally affected people. The citizens of the two worlds find it very difficult to listen and dialogue, because they speak radically different languages---even though they may use the same words. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
