If it is to be regarded as o.k. to give students pleasure how is the pleasure giving to be regulated? Where is it to stop? How can justice in pleasure-giving to be assured? Who can be trusted to give pleasure fairly and objectively? It may seem that to regard giving pleasure as o.k. is to open up the possibility of too many cases of favoritism and all the problems which favoritism generates. Thus professors who are not at home with pleasure fear to get involved in giving students pleasure---because they do not anticipate that they will be able to control the consequences. It may appear safer to give students negative reinforcements than positive reinforcements---for the danger of favoritism is thereby reduced. Cases of excessive negative reinforcement may seem easier to deal with than cases of excessive positive reinforcement. Thus justice may seem to favor the use of negative reinforcement over the use of positive reinforcement. Such a view does not take seriously the possible operation of professors gaining personal pleasure out of giving students a hard time. Professors who are not familiar with positive pleasures may get pleasure out of negative acts toward students. They may emphasize hard work, discipline, tenacity, specialization, perfection, thoroughness, dedication, commitment, etc. in ways which through fear promote student conformity to the behavior patterns and life styles valued by the professor. Failure to fulfill expectations may result in negative reinforcements and gain pleasure from fulfilling that duty. The student is not likely to become familiar with intellectual pleasures in that way---and so is set up to copy the professor as a role-model for the use of negative reinforcement, rather than run the risk of giving future students genuine intellectual and affectional pleasure. Giving students pleasure may appear a very dangerous thing to do. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
