The distinction between "acceptable behavior" and "acceptable people" is one which is rarely observed in daily practice. With rare exception people who engage in "unacceptable behavior" are "unacceptable people." Unacceptable behavior is often taken as the grounds for not listening to, nor talking to, not being in dialogue with those who engage in unacceptable behavior. The alienation thus occasioned naturally generates frustrations and perverse coping behavior which is even less acceptable. Often those people who do not "sublimate" their "primitive" desires and impulses are considered socially or culturally unacceptable. It is interesting to note that the desires and impulses which were the basis for the human species becoming the fittest species to survive through the past million years all of a sudden are judged by "rational men" to be unacceptable. It is even more interesting to note the kinds of anti-social behavior promoted by those "rational behavior" who consider primitive instincts and desires to be unacceptable. Rarely are such "rational men" facilitators of listening and dialogue between different people---the essence of social intercourse. They tend to specialize in behavior which promotes fragmentation and the blocking of social intercourse. The concept of "sublimation" is a mask for repression and suppression of essential desires and instincts which have been arrogantly judged to be unacceptable by so called "rational men." What is the essential difference between repression and sublimation? Between suppression and sublimation? In all cases "unacceptable" desires and instincts are not permitted expression. Communication is blocked. Honesty is discouraged. The truth is hidden. Alienation is promoted. Reconciliation is inhibited. Forgiveness is forbidden. Are we to regard "sublimation" as good. Of what humane use is the concept? Might it be essentially misleading? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
