We need air, warmth, water, food, exercise, companionship, personal affirmation, affection, sexual communication, sensory communication with our environment, intellectual stimulation, privacy, rest, etc. When our basic needs are adequately met we are relatively unaware of our needs and desires---they are met in the relaxed flow of life with relatively little self-consciousness regarding them. Needs which are met in a natural and relaxed way are not much noticed or though about. We are unaware of them. When circumstances inhibit the meeting of basic needs the level of desire at first rises and we become more and more aware of the need. We tend to think a great deal about the need and have a high level of desire. If such desires are met at an inadequate level the high level of desire may prompt us to act in what may be regarded as "perverted behavior" by those who do not understand in any familiar way our needs and desires. Needs which are not met at all, or at an extremely inadequate level, lead to high levels of hunger and ultimately to starvation. The term "starvation" tends to be used most often with respect to food, but it may be used just as well with regards to any of the other basic human needs. Starvation tends to undermine many levels of awareness, possibly including awareness of the unmet need. Starvation undermines personal integrity, and leaves behind less than a whole person---whether alive or dead. To deal with perverted behavior it is important to recognize instances in which the perversion flows from unmet human needs, from starvation. Often perverted behavior flows from unmet needs for affirmation, affection, and sexual communication. Responses to such perverted behavior often fail to recognize the behavior as being occasioned by unmet basic human needs. In fact, responses often tend to further inhibit the fulfillment of the needs for which the perverts are hungering. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
