Does the individual exist to serve the community, or does the community exist to facilitate the fulfillment of the individuals? If the individual exists to serve the community--- then anything which gets in the way of serving the community is to be regarded with suspicion and probably should be minimized. Personal enjoyment can often be a source of diversion. A person who should be working to meet communal needs may get diverted by activities which occasion personal pleasure. Thus enjoyable activities should be suspected, lest they get in the way of individuals meeting their responsibilities to the community. The situation becomes perverse if it is assumed that there is a conflict between meeting responsibilities to the community and finding enjoyment which meets personal needs. When such a conflict is assumed, there is a situation of forced choice. Scientists often assume such a force choice situation. They assume that their students have a responsibility to the profession and should dedicate their time to acquiring technical professional skills; it being assumed that enjoyment is likely to undermine fulfilling that responsibility. Thus professionals who are dedicated to the welfare of their profession as a source of ultimate values---are professionals who are unlikely to encourage their students to enjoy their professional activities. The students are likely to get subtle but powerful messages which say that their primary duty is to acquire skills, and that enjoyment is at least secondary --- if not suspect. This set of traditional professional perceptions tend to be counter-productive. Students who do not enjoy what they do are not likely to be as creative, productive, or supportive of their profession---as are students who find personal fulfillment in their professional activities. Students who do not enjoy what they are doing are likely to regard their professional activities as a burden, and seek to drop their burden because it violates their personal integrity.
