They feel at a loss if there is no problem confronting them. Their ultimate concern is to deal with problems. They fear the absence of problems as some people fear heights, enclosure, darkness, or open spaces. They need to have problems. Such people often appear as problem solvers. Yet, they must take care not to resolve all problems---lest they be left without their source of meaning. They often trade in one problem for two or more new problems---while apparently "solving" the problem which they trade in. When a problem might be eliminated by one course of action, they tend to solve it by another course of action which occasions additional problems which will give their lives meaning. Their lives are dedicated to solving problems for their own satisfaction, not to helping people. Highway builders will solve a transportation problem by building new highways which generate additional traffic, rather than by helping eliminate the need for traffic. Doctors will solve a dis-ease problem by treatments which put people ill at ease, rather than by helping people get to the root of their dis-ease. To get to the roots of dis-ease would not generate economic problems for doctors to solve. Lawyers solve problems by helping generate more laws which will occasion them more business, rather than by helping people transcend legalism. Teachers try to solve problems by educational programs which make students dependent upon formal instruction, rather than by offering programs which encourage students to become independent of formal instruction. Social workers try to solve social problems by social welfare programs which make people dependent upon social welfare programs, rather than by helping people in need to learn how to set their priorities and become politically effective in dealing with their problems. Technocrats try to deal with the problems generated by technology---by generating additional technology, rather than seeking to understand the limitations of technology. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
