Awe may be elicited by particularly sophisticated equipment and creations of man. Wonder may be occasioned by the artistic accomplishments of a creative technical person. A sense of satisfaction and fulfillment may come upon the attainment of a technical goal. Immediate pleasure may be deferred in the interests of attaining a long-term goal, but the ultimate pleasure is a strong motivating factor. Technical people often gain pleasure by fitting in well into a comprehensive plan or system. They enjoy the sight of a smoothly functioning machine and enjoy the sight of a corporate venture in which each participant does well the assigned job. A corporate machine which efficiently moves towards a well defined goal is a source of pleasure to many technical people. They will sacrifice a great deal to advance such a venture. Their fulfillment may come in the fulfillment of the purpose of the machine. Some technical people gain pleasure from the operations of a formal structure for the patterning of human activity. They like to work to organize corporate behavior so that society works smoothly according to some carefully developed plan. They enjoy seeing such a plan carried out on schedule. It fulfills their feeling for a sense of order. They may devise carefully worked out ethical, moral, or legal systems to promote human welfare---and work diligently to see to it that people conform to the behavior patterns which the system calls for. When such a system is found to be defective, they will work to devise an improved system, and gain pleasure from their creative efforts. The tragedy of technical pleasure is that usually those who enjoy technical pleasure are relatively unaware of non-technical pleasure and unfamiliar with people who enjoy non-technical pleasures. Communication between such different people tends to be minimal and the technical people's efforts to be of service to the non-technical people tend to be tragically counter-productive efforts which create as many new problems as they solve.
