An essential aspect of the game is keeping score. Usually the highest score wins, and the purpose of the game is to get ahead of the other contestant(s). Often the purpose is to keep the other contestants' scores minimal. The rules of a competitive game weigh against cooperation between competitors. Cooperation is discouraged by the nature of most games. A competitive society does not encourage non- competitive games. In a competitive society there is a tendency for all inter-personal relationships to become games people play in order to "win". There is a tendency to keep score according to some spoken/unspoken set of rules. The social competitors are not motivated to engage in cooperative ventures---because doing so will undermine their chances of winning: Students vie for a limited number of top scores. Businessmen vie for top management positions. Social climbers vie for a limited number of visible statuses. It may come to pass that people become so wrapped up in score-keeping that they cannot unwrap themselves and have any pleasure apart from keeping-score. They may have their pleasure undermined by a fear that another has a greater score than they have---regardless of how much scoreless-pleasure they may enjoy. The preoccupation with keeping score may obscure many potential scoreless- pleasures. They may end up with pleasure-less scores and be baffled by their lack of genuine satisfaction. The score-full society is likely to be preoccupied with annual incomes, gross national product, gross national consumption, and gross national waste. "More" as a score may come to be equated with "better", regardless of what it is more of. More bombs and more ability to kill the enemy many times over---may be equated with goodness, patriotism, and service of God. Keeping score can be very misleading---leading people to do insane things in the name of sanity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
