It is hard for any of us to perceive those relationships without bias, yet much depends upon transcending biases. For these reasons during my fall 1978 sabbatical I will focus upon formulating helpful questions and perspectives to consider in order to promote mutual understanding between scientists and the general public. As pump-primers I offer the following five questions: 1. Which of our concerns most block dialogue between scientists and the general public? 2. In what situations do scientists' professional values block dialogue between them and members of the general public? 3. How can teachers openly help their students to personally identify the limited ranges-of-propriety of scientists' professional values? 4. How can science teachers learn to affirm their students' personal values within the limited ranges-of- propriety of their students' values? 5. Who will support the formulation of such basic questions, and who will oppose their formulation? Sincerely yours, Paul A. Smith (c) 2005 by Paul A.
