We may objectify, ignore, repress, ritualize, analyze, sublimate, formalize, verbalize, or politicize our problematic emotions. In objectification we treat emotions as objective realities caused by others who are responsible for what they cause. We then can claim a right to be free of others causing disturbing emotions in us; make it illegal for them to bother us. When we ignore our emotions, they tend to wither for lack of exercise. We become less sensitive through diversion to non-emotional activities. Our emotions become displaced by our focusing on non-emotional concerns; e.g., objective or analytic concerns in exclusively technical activities. We tend to repress emotions out of fear, and they tend to assume other forms and pop up in their new forms. The repression process then becomes a full-time job which demands major portions of our psychic energy and time. We may use rituals to elicit, channel, or repress emotions. Within ritualistic contexts we may as adolescents be trained to experience traditional emotions through role modeling. Such elicited emotions are channeled by traditional role models. Rituals may also be used on occasions of high emotion---to repress awareness of emotions by tangential responses and repressed role models. We may also invent rituals to serve as avenues of expression of emotions---seeking formal ways of channeling them when we fear we may not be able to handle them on our own. We may analyze our emotions in order to discount their meaning and reduce their power to move us. Through analysis we may seek to fragment them and deprive them of the holistic integrity which has power over us. We may divert our attention from our emotions to the analysis of emotions in the abstract---thereby ignoring our particular emotions. We may sublimate our emotions by expressing our need for action in ways other than those directly motivated by our emotions---deflecting their force. We may formalize our emotions by giving them expression in formal action or language---possibly in political action through formal political processes. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
