Scientists do not transcend biases by being scientific; they select a particular set of biases which are fruitful in specific non-personal situations---but destructive in many very personal situations. For us to personally survive the scientific revolution we must learn to transcend the scientists' biases. This means that we must in some sense become aware of the scientists' biases. That will be hard to do so long as there is a tendency to worship scientists as magicians who can do all kinds of impossible tricks upon command. It will be hard to do, as long as scientists refuse to become aware of their own biases and of the situations in which their biases are inappropriate and dangerous. So long as scientists' biases are passed from generation to generation without critical examination---so long will we be victims of our consumptive technocratic culture. Young people are particularly well qualified to critically examine our scientists' biases. However, to do so they must be protected from punishments which may be inflicted by scientists who are too emotionally immature to endure a profound and constructive criticism of their biases. such criticisms will uncover embarrassing aspects of scientists' lives and reveal how their biases are expressed in political self-serving behavior. Positions of power and influence will be at stake. Pretentious reputations may be destroyed. The older scientists are likely to fearful of profound critics who threaten their cherished but unexamined assumptions. In fear they are likely to repress the critics in order to preserve the scientists' status quo. In order to ensure that the scientists' biases do not blind us to those very biases we will need to protect and augment our traditional guarantees of communication rights. Freedoms of verbal communication will need to be extended to broader freedoms of communication which involve non-verbal channels of communication. The kinds of insights which will expose the biases of the scientists will involve non-verbal representations in essential ways. In the absence of guarantees of freedom of non-verbal communication and dialogue, such insights will be risky to have or share. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
