Specialization in regards to types of patterns used as the basis for improving understanding/deciding, modes of communication, and contents of communication---undermines a balanced awareness of diversity---and so undermines humility. Those who excel in a specialty tend towards arrogance rather than humility. They tend not to value unique people, situations, opportunities, and events in their diversity; valuing each only in terms of how well it affirms their specialty either directly or indirectly. Specialists without a balanced awareness of diversity tend to be threatened by any affirmation which is not made by their specialty---for such affirmations challenge the universality of their specialty. Unbalanced specialists tend to feel insecure in the presence of unfamiliar affirmations---and are likely to pass judgment upon such affirmations in terms of the values of their specialty, rather than in terms of existential experiences. Their arrogance blocks the development of a balanced awareness of the diversity of people of integrity. They are cut off by their lack of humility, and so humility is not nurtured in them. The prison bars which they built about themselves obscure their view so much that they cannot see that they are in prison. They value the prison so exclusively that they cannot see how their values constrain them. Often they arrogantly proclaim the ultimate importance and goodness of their prison bars--- and are baffled by people who refuse to be "saved" by exclusive use of those bars to keep the "unsaved" out of the fellowship which is held together by those bars. Their arrogant collusions blind them to the futility of their exclusivity. Humility cannot be achieved as a goal, for to achieve it undermines it. Thus it is futile to strive towards humility as a goal, or to expect others to do so. Humility is a gift given unconditionally to those who open themselves to the diversity of people of integrity. Humility is not achieved through dedication to any exclusive set of values---no matter how ethical, moral, religious, pious, respectable, rational, logical, scientific, pragmatic, profitable, or previously helpful such a set of values may be; for exclusive values undermine mutual awareness and mutual understanding.
