In fact, adolescence is the age of integration of patterns for perception, understanding, and decisions. If patterns are not integrated in the age of adolescence, they tend to form exclusive sets which are exceedingly difficult to integrate in later years. Those patterns which are internalized as exclusive elements of a personality become set within the personality as being essentially exclusive --- and resist future integrative efforts. To become an integrative personality in the powerful years of middle age a person should carry out the integrative process during the formative years of adolescence. Failure to be an integrative adolescent leads to disintegrative behavior as an adult leader and/or a very difficult period of trying to bring together apparently contradictory elements of one's personality in the middle-years passage. Middle-age teachers and administrators tend to vie for the allegiance of adolescents who are seeking to develop integrated personalities. The contest for their allegiance tends to pull the adolescents apart and undermine their integrative efforts. Mentors with exclusive definitions of excellence are not able to help adolescents who are seeking personal integrity, except as they respect the adolescents' right to be themselves and to be free to communicate freely among themselves and with adults who are able to support their integrative efforts. It may be helpful to become aware of the stages in life when it is easiest for a person to grow in certain ways. To the extent that integrative efforts may most easily bear fruit in a certain developmental stage---to that extent the educational process should be designed to promote integrative growth during that developmental stage. It is likely to be counter-productive to emphasize specialization at just the time when integration may most effectively be undertaken. Integration of new experiences should be sought as they are internalized, not at some later developmental stage when "maturity" has been achieved---and experiences have been internalized with exclusive claims being associated with each. Internalization of eternal conflict results from deferral of integration until after the appropriate developmental stage/passage for integration. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
