Such a sojourn is not likely to be one of full integrity because the wayfarer is unfamiliar with the ways of the complementary pole of the dichotomy---and carries many of the deeply rooted exclusive values of the other pole. Upon returning to the native pole of the dichotomy such a wayfarer is bound to again take up the exclusive values of the native pole and look with judgment upon the sojourn---and experience guilt. The dichotomous prodigal is likely to face a dichotomous choice: repent and rededicate self to the exclusive values of the native pole, or rebel and repudiate the exclusive values of the native pole. The latter usually appears the more risky because of the cultural context of the native pole and the unknown ambiguities of the complementary pole. Thus, usually the repentance route is chosen and a way sought to expiate the sense of guilt. The most readily available way to expiate the sense of guilt is to repudiate the sojourn and all others who have been so foolish, weak, evil, misguided, rebellious as to be such a wayfarer; the repentant wayfarer thus becomes a stern judge of other wayfarers--- and so contributes to the maintenance of the collusions of the dichotomous pole. The more severe the sense of the guilt, the more severe the judgments likely to be occasioned by that guilt. In the nature of the procedures of such a repentant judge there will be excommunicative messages conveyed by various channels of communication. The wayfarers are excommunicated for seeking to integrate the two dichotomous poles, and so sin abounds to occasion many sins which cannot be corrected by technical procedures devised at either dichotomous pole. Judicial procedures are inadequate to cope with such a devilish situation--- for the situation is occasioned by misguided efforts to correct it. The counter-productive nature of the understanding of the situation must be revealed, else there is no exit. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
