Our dominant values are those which dominate our daily behavior---the values which we defend most vigorously through our behavior in word and deed. Or dominant values reveal our ultimate concerns. In our faithful service of them we tend to deny, or at least neglect, complimentary values which are the ultimate concerns of other people. Our affirmation of our dominant values tends to be perceived as the denial of the complimentary values which are the ultimate concern of our neighbors. This apparent denial occasions conflicts which might be resolved by our affirmation of values which are complimentary to our own dominant values. Such conflicts will persist so long as we neglect to affirm complimentary values. Our negligence sustains our conflicts. Specialization promotes the unqualified affirmation of dominant values until the dominant values become idols worshiped as if they were gods who undermine the possibility of affirming complimentary values. When we become the servants of such gods we are not free to affirm complimentary values, and we lose our integrity. No limited set of values can be the exclusive basis of personal integrity. Integrity is not achieved through exclusivity, by finding and in an unqualified way affirming a limited set of ultimately good values. Integrity is occasioned by Love which unconditionally promotes compassionate communication. Communication is very limited between people who, through neglect, deny each other's most meaningful values. Communications of denial is a very limited form of communication. Communications of mutual value-affirmation are not so limited, and include dialogues in which reciprocity serves to amplify individual perceptions and fulfillments. The affirmation of values complimentary to our own dominant values---is an essential aspect of any meaningful dialogue. In the absence of such affirmations dialogue is nearly impossible. Thus the transcendence of the two culture dichotomy in its various manifestations will involve the affirmation of complimentary values--- something which is usually neglected by technocrats within both cultures.
