Without dialogue there can not be effective pedagogy, no matter how great the command of the knowledge and skills may be. Without a command of the knowledge and skills, dialogue tends to be uninformed and fruitless as regards teaching. Effecting pedagogy depends upon personal integrity wherein the essential elements are united in a person who is artist, scientist, and professes some convictions. To ignore the pedagogical lessons of experienced teachers is foolish. Some approaches are far more fruitful than others. Experience indicates this. It is foolish for teachers not to attend to the lessons learned by previous teachers. Exclusive concern with content matter tends to inhibit attention to instructional methodology--and undermine pedagogy. The effectiveness of teaching depends greatly upon how the student is approached and what techniques are employed in relating to the student. These are questions of methodology, separate from content. The effective teacher is as concerned about methodology as content. Those who take a strong position that one is more important than the other can not be effective teachers---for they exclude an essential aspect of good pedagogy. The person who exclusively values content---can not perceive with appreciation the art and science of the methodology of the effective teacher who respects the essential place of content---while at the same time realizing the role of instructional methodology. The person who exclusively values methodology---is not likely to perceive the essential role of a solid command of content in the teacher who, through integrity, is effective.
