Victims of spectatoritis watch teachers lecture, listen to politicians' speeches, watch/listen to the evening news, watch athletic events, watch movies about intimate human relationships, etc.; yet they do not contribute to learning, political action, making news, playing athletic games themselves, or get involved in intimate human relationships. People with spectatoritis sit on the side- lines and watch the world go by. They exist to be entertained. Their lives are empty in the absence of external events upon which to focus their attention. Victims of spectatoritis are susceptible to political manipulations, because they have no unique personal focus in their lives. Their lives revolve about external controlling factors--factors which clever initiators may manipulate to their own advantage at the expense of victims of spectatoritis. To be effective such manipulations must fulfill the needs of the victims of spectatoritis--provide activities for them to watch with minimal participation. Election campaigns are often designed to achieve such ends. Citizens are not encouraged to do their own research into the issues and qualifications of the candidates. They are encouraged to watch the candidates over-simplify the issues and vote according to the most impressive spectacle. The most effective technocratic manipulators thus acquire political power and intensify the technocratic society through their manipulations of the victims of spectatoritis ---while keeping them quite satisfied with their disease. The cure for spectatoritis is to undermine the comfort which goes with the disease. The victims need to be woken up and helped to understand what their condition is and where it is taking them. They need to become aware of the possibility of another kind of life, and to recognize the alternative as to be preferred. They need to be given new opportunities for participation in large numbers in setting the priorities for their own lives and for the life of the community of which they are a part.
