A person can not learn to cope with failure without having some recognized failures. The student who is never recognized for learning from failures is not likely to learn how to cope with recognized failures. If such a student becomes an adult without having learned the lesson of how to cope with recognized failures, than as an adult the student will probably fail to cope creatively with failures. Learning to deal with recognized failures should be part of the educational experience of every student. The student who has no recognized failures is not liberally educated. The "perfect" student may have learned early in life to gain the affirmation of important teachers, parents, friends, and relatives---by gaining formal academic recognitions through high grades and academic honors. Such a student may learn that such formal recognition is the only means to personal affirmation and love. Such a lesson may be learned even though unconditional affirmation and love is available. The conclusion may be internalized even though it is not warranted. The belief that the affirmation and love which is enjoyed originates in formal academic recognition, will tend to imprison the student in the belief that any failure will result in the withdrawal of love and affirmation. Such an un- articulated belief will generate the compulsion to perfection, and terror at the thought of anything but perfect formal evaluations. So long as the belief remains un-articulated, its absurdity will remain hidden, and its power to pervert behavior will remain strong. The person who is in the prison of never failing is not free to earnestly consider varied alternatives for personal service and fulfillment. Formal success be the ultimate concern, and courting the formal favors of persons in positions of power (to make formal evaluations) will be a compulsive concern which will undermine genuine personal motivation and endeavor. Openness and honesty with such persons will be undercut by a fear of revealing weaknesses, imperfections, and the possibility of future failures. Thus "perfect" students may suffer intense alienation from even those mentors closest to them, if the students are in a prison of never failing. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
