Commonly it is taken for granted that any difficulty in analysis originates in imagining possible perspectives/models in terms of which understanding would be possible. Granted that view---the blockage is at the point of lack of imagination and creativity. We know little about how to promote imagination and creativity --- so there is little we can do to remove that kind of blockage. Blockage may exist, however, between imagination and creativity on the one hand, and the conscious expression of that imagination and creativity. Cultural forces may inhibit overt expression of imagination and creativity--- to the point that they do not rise to the level of conscious articulations. Problems which are both important and difficult may be impossible to analyze because of blockages to the key insights which keep the insights from reaching conscious articulations. If such is the case, there may be among us a great deal of wasted imagination and creativity and one of our most important tasks is to remove the origins of the blockage. Intellectuals and rationally oriented people in general tend not to give much thought to the role of their emotional lives in creating the matrix for their activities which usually appear to be relatively unrelated to emotions. Yet, blockages of their analyses are far more likely to be related to their emotional lives than to their intellectual/rational lives. Blockages tend to originate in fear of one form or another; e.g., fear of: being different, making mistakes, appearing silly, not succeeding, the unfamiliar, punishment, ridicule, being excluded, being excommunicated --- the last being the core of most fears which generate blockages. To the extent that this analysis is relevant---the precondition for helpful analysis is the conviction that you will be accepted and loved regardless of what imaginations and creativity you express --- and the repeated confirmation of that conviction in daily experience from infancy through childhood, adolescence, young adulthood, middle age, and the final years of life.
