We are not given our lines; we choose our plots and write our lines as we live. Together we write our mutual play, as we act it out--- getting pretty much what we decide we want. Often we are unaware of what we really want, but successfully write/act and plot the lines we want nevertheless---even as we verbally protest our developments; for we want to be able to protest our unfortunate situation. In order to be able to protest our unfortunate situation we choose a plot in which our situation is unfortunate. Our lives are full of tensions which mirror the uncertainties in our desires. The confusions of our lives reveal the sloppy way in which we develop our plots, moving sometimes in one direction and other times in an opposite direction---without integrative sense. We take cues from each other in how to develop our plots; attending to different playwrights desires at different times and so making a play without integrity. For our play to develop into one which has integrity, as playwrights we must develop some common themes. We must develop personal and corporate integrity. We must accept the responsibility which we have of choice, and realize that it is greater than we care to admit. We must realize that many times we choose our problems, infirmities, tragedies, etc. just as much as we choose our successes, strengths, glories, etc. The negative sides of our plots play a central role in our success as playwrights, just as do the positive sides of our plots. We must accept responsibility for how we put our total play together---and stop blaming "others" for the alienation, sin, and sins which we include in our lives. At the same time we must realize that we do not have total power, and accept the ambiguity in just how much power we have. Many of us write the lines for our play in such a way that we are cast as victims in a situations apparently beyond our influence. We can be successful playwrights in casting ourselves as victims, and we may play our roles as victims with distinction. Yet as successful playwrights we do not have to develop the plot in that way, nor cast ourselves as impotent victims. But, we will keep playing the role of victim as long as we think superior powers are writing the play, and casting the actors into their roles. We cast ourselves in the role of victim because we fear the power of love which might transform us into true beings in love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
