The invisibility originates in excessive familiarity and total unfamiliarity. What is excessively familiar to members of one culture may be totally unfamiliar to members of another culture. That which is excessively familiar may be invisible because it is so taken for granted that it is impossible to see how things could be otherwise. In the absence of a visible contrast between how things are and how they might be, we can not see clearly how they are. You can not clearly see a perfectly white object against a perfectly white background. Perception is not possible without contrast. That which is imperceptible to one person because of familiarity and lack of contrast, may be imperceptible to another person due to lack of familiarity and due to perceptual blockages. That which is real may be so foreign and unthinkable as to be imperceptible due to repression---even when confronted by the reality face-to- face. To perceive the reality might undermine the meaning/reality of a dysfunctional ultimate concern. Different cultures value and take for granted different ways of perceiving, thinking, feeling, understanding, coping, relating, communicating, controlling, deciding, worshiping, educating, researching, etc. What is real and valuable to one culture may be invisible to that culture, and yet be invisible to members of another culture due to lack of familiarity or due to aversion repression. Such a situation can occasion conflict and violence due to misunderstanding originating in the invisible cultural elements---even though there would be no conflict if the invisible cultural elements were to become visible. (There are cases where making the invisible cultural elements become visible will not resolve a conflict, because the origin of the conflict is not in a misunderstanding.) Where conflict and violence originate in misunderstandings, it may appear that there is no misunderstanding, because the origin of the misunderstanding is in the invisible cultural elements. This means it is important to seek to bring to light invisible cultural elements in general, so as to uncover as many cross cultural misunderstandings as possible---and thereby be able to reduce conflict and violence which is avoidable.
