Unnecessarily they adopt obscure language and symbolism to make it possible for only the most able to qualify for entry into the profession. Via collusions, the professionals become unable to distinguish between essential language specialization, and language specialization which merely serves to mystify, rather than to facilitate, communication and clear thinking. Mystification sometimes involves merely failing to clarify relationships beyond the confusion regarding them when they were first discovered. By keeping relationships in a state of confusion it is possible to keep only the most able students as the new initiates into the profession. The less creative students may be unable to rediscover for themselves the full scope of the meaning of the awkwardly represented relationships. Thus professionals sometimes resist reducing their discoveries to routines which only moderately able people can cope with. They feel that to do so would be very unprofessional; i.e., open the profession up to far more people and destroy the elite character of the profession. The motivation for mystification may be the desire of elite professionals to gain a sense of satisfaction and meaning out of being "special", by being among the few who understand obscure truths and have unusual skills. This is especially true if they lack emotional maturity and are not present within an affective community which can affirm their whole personhood with individual and communal integrity. Lacking affective affirmation, the professionals may seek elitist professional affirmations as a source of meaning. To succeed in achieving their goal of professional affirmation, they may have to participate in traditional rituals of mystification. They may find it difficult to gain entrance into the profession if they "drag their heels" about participating in traditional rituals of mystification. Professionals fear the entry into their profession of individuals who seem intent upon undermining the basis of the elitism which is the source of the professionals' substitute for affective affirmation. Thus mystification cannot be overcome by frontal attacks. Providing for affective affirmations is likely to be far more helpful. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
