They have made an intelligent choice to seek to serve students in rational ways. By systematic procedures they determine what will be best for students and devise programs of educational curricula which will educate the students properly. Intellectual love tends towards legalistic moralism and emotional excommunication. Out of a love of intelligence, only a few students are respected and trained to be excellent intellectuals. An intellectual love of students occasions excellence in logical, analytic, quantitative and rational processes --- for those who are willing to sell their souls to serve such excellence. Those who love students only intellectually tend to excommunicate those students who are unwilling to sell their souls to serve objective techniques. Some educators are motivated by an affective love of students. They do not fear emotional involvement and have no compulsive need to maintain full control of their emotional involvement to assure that it conforms to preconceived notions of what is good and what is evil. They are free to take the risk of trusting their students and entering into an un-programmed dialogue in which participants risk their selves and others --- to the creative processes of Love. The fruits of such dialogue are not likely to be exactly as anybody planned. Preconceived goals are not likely to be achieved according to plan. Values of participants are as likely to be changed/transformed --- as they are to be fulfilled. In true dialogue the participants do not have conformity as an ultimate concern. Each may educe the other without fear of seduction, for through love they are free of the fear of emotional punishment, guilt, and shame. True dialogues take place in an emotional fail-safe context. Through true dialogue participants decide what is true as much as they discover what is true. They realize their visions by giving themselves to dialogues which transcend exclusively intellectual and the exclusively affective ways of coping. Such dialogues threaten their present identity only to the extent that they seek to maintain a rigid identity. It does not threaten those who realize the power of Love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
