Love empowers people to decline to reject self and others because of coercive judgments. In the spirit of love, alienative judgments are set aside, and the natural problems created by mistakes are described and resolved in as loving way as possible. Love makes confessions possible and so facilitates learning from each other's personal mistakes, successes, joys, pleasures, pains, frustrations, doubts, fears, hopes, faith, and love. Judgments block personal confessions and so block helpful learning. Guides to living are thus cut off from their personal origins, lose their humane spirit, and evolve into legalistic systems which form the basis for future coercive judgments. Because judgments block confessions, personal experiences which might otherwise reveal the maladaptive nature of a given legalistic system --- are repressed; and thus the legalistic system makes its victims unable to reject it, and unable to adapt to a changing environment. Ultimately the changing environment passes judgment upon the legalistic system --- through its victims' inability to adapt to change. Judgment promotes alienation when it is exclusive in nature. Judgement can be an affirmative act which is inclusive in nature. When love motivates judgment it can act to promote reconciliation, but not through the use of techniques in the way of the legalists. Love's judgments act through affirmations which reveal the impotence of that which is judged. Love puts forth options and opportunities which by comparison are so attractive as to make that which is judged seem undesirable. Thus love promotes freedom of choice by widening the horizon of opportunities, rather than by passing laws which narrow the range of options open. Love promotes wise behavior by spreading a banquet of desirable possibilities, rather than by causing vision to be narrowed to a perception of prescribed behavior which has received technical approval. Love accepts the judgment of the free self --- to whom a spectrum of realistic/desirable possibilities has been presented. Love does not fear that judgment, and works to promote communal and personal integrity through it and its natural consequence. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
