Your self is not an object moving among other objects. The relationships between your self and others are not exclusively objective relationships. To treat them as such does violence to those relationships, and so to your self which is created by and embodied in those relationships. Aspects of real personal relationships transcend objectivity. Real personal relationships cannot be fully understood objectively. This is not to say that exclusively objective personal relationships do not exist. It is to say that when such relationships do exist they are not very real in humane terms. Many people do treat each other as objects. They are not real people. They are but shadows, projections, of real people. They lack depth and color---just as shadows lack the depth and color of that which cast the shadow. Technically oriented people tend to value objectivity. As a result they tend to be shadows, and see others as shadows revealing only the outline of what they might be---but without inner content. This is especially true when objectivity becomes an exclusive ultimate value. Then, in the name of objectivity, people are treated as if they were no more than a complex collection of electrons, protons, and neutrons---obeying the laws of physicists, chemists, biologists, psychologists, sociologists, economists, and sales-promotion managers. The objective models become more central to the understanding of people than are intimate personal relationships. The theories about people become more central than the reality the theories represent. Exclusively objective people lose touch with each other, and theorize about each other, in the absence of each other. Theories which are in agreement with each other are looked upon favorably, but the theorists do not look favorably upon each other as whole persons who involves mysterious unions of mind, body, and soul within a communal context. People who are exclusively objective in their content-focus have a difficult time as educators, because they carry over the exclusively objective approaches into personal relationships. It is hard for them to do otherwise. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
