The former find pleasure in objective/analytic activities dealing with objects, ideas, and laws. They regard their activities in an objective way and are relatively unaware of the pleasure they derive from their activities. They do not perceive the desire for pleasure as influencing their value judgements, choices of how to spend scarce resources, or rational/logical processes. They regard those who openly seek pleasure as being on a lower level of existence. Their collusion blinds them to the source of their motivation. Those who regard pleasure as the only appropriate goal are often honest about what they seek. They tend to be successful in enjoying pleasure for a brief span of time, but tend not to act in ways which will promote the long-term enjoyment of pleasure. They do not know how to sacrifice a little pleasure now---in order to assure the possibility of greater joy and pleasure over the long- term. Those who lock with condescension upon the pleasure seekers tend to justify their short-term activities as means to long-term fulfillment. They tend, however, to make deferral of fulfillment into an ultimate good---and their lives become filled with means to fulfillment which is never permitted to be present. Thus pleasure becomes the repressed motivation for striving, and alienative techniques become the ever present reality of life. Such is the dynamic of the technocratic society which is driven by repressed desires---and knows not what it is striving for. Its future is seen in the fulfillment of technological possibilities, not in the fulfillment of human beings. The fulfillment of technological possibilities gives the machines no known and acknowledged pleasure, and so is acceptable. That the fulfillment of technological possibilities gives the technocrats pleasure is not honestly admitted, for that would make clear to others what was the purpose of the drive for technical progress. Others might decide that serving such a special interest group was not in the public interest; would not lead to personal and communal integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
