Focusing attention on the symptom of the problem may be foolish; e.g., attempting to surgically remove chicken pox marks, or the self-conscious person trying to become more self-conscious to over-come self- consciousness. To solve problems we must deal with the roots of the problems, not just the symptoms---even when it is the symptoms which are the problem to us. Some people regard violent behavior as a problem. Violent behavior is a problem to the victim of the violence; yet such behavior is but a symptom of the real problem which is alienation. Authoritarian ways of dealing with violence commonly aggravate the real problem---and so increase alienation and violence. The roots of violence need to be identified so that we may avoid nurturing future violence. Violence originates in the breakdown of human communication. To reduce violence we must work to broaden and deepen authentic human communications. People who have been afraid to reveal themselves must be given the security needed to encourage them to take the risk to reveal themselves--and must be accepted when they do reveal themselves. Only then will human alienation and violence decline. Society needs to protect itself against the damage of violent members of society; but the means of protection must not aggravate the alienation which is the source of that violence. Too often the methods advocated by "law- and-order" enthusiasts are methods which reduce, rather than increase, human communication and mutual understanding. The criminal is separated from society, rather than helped to be in fuller communication with society. The agents of "law-and-order" become separated from the society---rather than integral members of its daily activities. The roots of violence are well nourished when the policemen, lawyers, judges, and prison officials are alienated individuals---profiting from the processing of another class of alienated individuals. Such nourishment of agents will insure that such profit will increase---until the whole system destroys itself through the violence it promotes; unless the foolishness of the profits and the system are recognized and dealt with---by appropriate indirect ways which promote genuine human communication within a context of trust and mutual acceptance.
