No set procedures or well defined rules will promote creativity. Creativity involves the bringing together of what was formerly separate, perhaps formerly separated. They who fear the new---cannot be creative. They who fear the new---may not permit others to be creative. Emotional immaturity and insecurity can thus stifle creativity. This is true of the technically sophisticated; perhaps more true of them than of the simple. Technical sophistication is often a compensation for emotional immaturity. Security is sought through manipulation, when it is not present in human relationships to begin with. Creativity may be limited to manipulative activities, and later to clarify alienative activities. Thus, the breadth and depth of creativity is reduced by the way in which it is directed; finally its expression may result in self-elimination. Creativity becomes self-defeating as it becomes narrowly specialized. Those who are not free to see the broad scope of reality become creative in narrow ways which produce even narrower specialization. In a vicious feed-back loop specialists engage in activities which have little survival value. The vicious feed-back loop can be broken only by the entry of perceptions from outside the domain of the specialists. Such perceptions may make possible the resumption of emotional growth which will promote emotional security. As emotional security develops, specialists may transcend manipulative relationships and so rise above self-defeating narrow specialization. Then individuals may become free to be themselves, rather than be the fulfillment of conventional expectations. Individuals may be creative, rather than conventional. Creativity is possible only in an emotionally fail-safe context. Institutions often seek to promote creativity. This is quite difficult for institutions to do; except as the institutions are dedicated to promoting intellectual and emotional openness and honesty. It is far more common for institutions to be dedicated to promoting the fulfillment of conventional expectations---which will insure the survival of the institutional status quo. Those who support institutions often have conservative values--- which are retrospective rather than visionary. Their inclinations often undermine creativity by inhibiting love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
