Technocrats manipulate objects and persons, and undermine the possibility of full trust. Trust grows in the eternal now of authentic meetings in which participants seek each other, rather than seek to manipulate each other. Trust grows when individuals take the risks of intimate relationships, knowing and feeling that they are in a fail-safe context, one in which a failure to fulfill expectations only rarely demands emotional pain, estrangement, and alienation. In a technocratic society young people are accultrated to mutual manipulations, and come to regard that way of life as normal. In spite of normal human instincts many young people lose track of real living which is always in meeting---they cease to live. Sophisticated programs created by technocrats to maintain standards of quality of life will not help persons escape this trap. The technocratic society can be transcended only through a miracle, not through an internally consistent transformation, nor by a trip through space- time to a more "favorable" place or time. Because of the lack of communication between technocrats and others---there is lack of trust. The lack of trust is mutual. There is no mutual understanding because there is no mutual awareness of a common set of important elements in life. What is important to the technocrat---is not important to others, and vice versa. Their values differ, often in kind as well as in particularity. Even further, their value systems are likely to be profoundly different---although not always. The technocrat will most likely have a value system which is self-defeating; and continued dedication to it stands in the way of a commitment to openness to others. Transcending the two culture split will require the taking of risks of the part of all participants. Participants must risk an examination of their most cherished unexamined assumptions---with the examination taking place in the light of other's perceptions of reality. These risks are likely to be felt as profoundly threatening at the emotional level, making it hard to accept the essential miracle. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
